The award was presented at a glittering ceremony on 9th December 2011 at the 4th KPMG – Infrastructure Today Award 2011 at New Delhi. The ceremony was graced by Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India. The prestigious award was received by Mr. Shashank Shekhar, Vice President, Business Development on behalf of KMC Infratech Limited.

About KPMG-Infrastructure Today Awards:
KPMG-Infrastructure Today Awards, instituted in the year 2008 and are India’s first ever infrastructure awards. The annual awards have been presented by dignitaries like Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Dy. GET Training & Orientation Programme
SONA-KMC Learning Center at Salem, Yercaud, Tamilnadu.
The new employee orientation program effectively helps integrate new employee into KMC with ease. The program assists associates with grass-root understanding of company policies and practices. The orientation also helps quickly enable each individual to become contributing members of the work team. An important initiative to bring in, mould and cultivate fresh talent into the organization, KMC recruits fresh B. Tech /B.E from campuses across the country the role of Graduate Engineer Trainees (GET).

The year started with a Training & Orientation Program for Civil Batches during Sept – Oct 2011 representing Graduates Engineer’s undergoing the training program for six days. Aptly called ‘Parichay’, the First Batch Training & Orientation Program saw 24 GET’s from the civil stream undergoing the orientation program. The Second Batch of 23 GET’s from Civil got inducted and trained in the respective functional areas in the following weeks.
The Induction (Parichay) program was conducted at SONA – KMC Learning Center, Yercaud near Salem in Tamilnadu.
GET’s from Mechanical stream underwent their Parichay – Training & Orientation Program between 7th Nov.- 12th Nov.2011. The trainers and experts for this focused training were drawn from KMC partners & vendors like Schwing Stetter, Volvo, Metso, Wirtgen, Ashok Lelyand, Castrol, JK Tyres, Gmmco Pvt. Ltd. Etc.., This apart the mechanical GET’s also had the opportunity to visit the JCB Training and service centre during the orientation program to get a first hand practical insight on workshop & maintenance handling.

One the key highlights of the “Parichay” is been the interaction that GET’s had with various functional Heads from different vertical domains across KMC.

With India planning huge investment in infrastructure development, which sectors are likely to witness maximum activity in this decade?
Infrastructure development is today recognised as essential to sustain India’s economic growth. The Indian road network is today one of the largest road networks in the world with a total network of more than 3.3 million km. Road development is being accorded a high priority by all stakeholders due to its reach and vast network. It is seen as one of the important initiatives to boost the country’s economy. KMC is happy to be one of the largest players in this important industry. Others like power, railways, non-renewable source management and ports too are growing at a phenomenal pace.

What has been the impact of global infrastructure developers entering India?
The government’s determination to bridge the infrastructure deficit provides an immense opportunity to international financial institutions and infrastructure companies to participate in the National Highways Development Project. You would be hearing a lot of PPP model with, global companies also being a partner to help push the aggressive growth targets the
industry has envisioned to achieve. As already shared our strategic relationship with 3i is one of such stories.

How does KMC Constructions plan to leverage opportunities in the road sector?
Yes, a vision of such scale is important knowing the country’s roadway being one of the largest road networks in the world. The other initiatives from the government like raising cap on foreign institutional investor investment in government
and corporate bonds, and also the policy of government to allow FIIs to invest additional resources in bonds issued by firms engaged in this crucial infrastructure sector, are right moves towards achieving the same.

As you would be aware, we have just received a funding of `500 crore from 3i Group plc, Canada. We see 3i as a strong partner who understands the local infrastructure space and the roads sector and this also offers us a wide global network of contacts and experience.

The railway budget has emphasised on infrastructure upgraupgradation. Are there plans to grab opportunities in this sector?
Yes, our pursuit and focus to be one of top infrastructure companies operating in Indian space in next few years has pushed us for an allround value creation for investors and partners alike. Our core experience adds merit to our plans to
invest into niche sectors like power, railways, non-renewable sources and transportation verticals.

How is shortage of skilled and trained manpower affecting infrastructure companies?
The order book has been encouraging for us. The industry does understand the challenges in sourcing skilled labour. We also foresee some concerns on availability of manpower in niche areas of infrastructure space. However, we have initiated
some out of box approach like providing training and skill updation to prospects from rural India in this crucial sector through one of our divisions and in turn create a pool of professionals with hands on experience. I am positive of our confidence, like other major core infrastructure players across this vibrant sector in handling the skilled manpower concerns.

What are KMC Construction’s long-term plans?
Being one of the largest operators in the premium infrastructure space, we are looking forward to consolidate our position
in this important sector. We plan to integrate our operations further through real-time investment on advanced IT services.
We are hopeful that our investments in cutting-edge technologies into our planning, design and day to day operations would significantly help improve our capability to deliver unique offerings while reducing lead time along with being environment conscious towards project completion. We are looking forward to increasing our presence in critical niche areas like power, railways and non-renewable energy space apart from roads and structures. KMC Constructions has successfully completed more than 20 major projects in the last decade.

Can you tell us about this achievement?
To give a brief about us, KMC was established in 1970, when my father, Mr. M. Raja Mohan Reddy, started a partnership
firm ‘Krishna Mohan Constructions’. Being a technocrat with immense focus on quality systems, the company under his
able leadership has to date executed more than 100 projects related to construction of state and national highways.
Krishna Mohan Constructions’ became a private limited company in 1993 and in 1994 got established into a public limited company known today as KMC Constructions Ltd. Today KMC boasts an outstanding track record and is recognised as one
of India’s foremost players operating in premium infrastructure space. KMC has executed as on date some of the largest and most complex EPC projects in the country.

Ongoing focus on highway infrastructure is essential

KMC Constructions Ltd of Hyderabad is moving ahead on its vision to explore newer opportunities in the fields of energy, ports, realty and SEZ in addition to its core domain of transport infrastructure. Goutham Reddy talks about the significance of road and highway development to economic growth in an interaction with Sandeep Menezes.

Do you think the target of building 20 km per day is achievable?
A vision of such scale is important knowing that the country’s road network is one of the largest in the world. Initiatives by the government like raising cap on foreign institutional investor investment in government and corporate bonds and the policy to allow FIIs to invest additional resources in bonds issued by firms engaged in this crucial infrastructure sector are right moves towards achieving the target.

NHAI recently tightened the eligibility norms for road subcontractors.
National Highways Authority of India has tightened the noose around subcontractors, with a minimum eligibility clause, to ensure the quality of roads being built.

The new clause, introduced for the first time, states that subcontractors engaged by a concessionaire must have the experience of completing at least a single highway project of 20 per cent value of the estimated project cost in the preceding five years from the date of execution of the current work.

Road development is a priority sector and the ongoing focus on highway infrastructure development is essential to sustain India’s economic growth, and we have made significant inroads towards this focus. The need is to improve on our focus and hence the new norms. This I hope will result in better quality premium infrastructure in years to come.

A substantial portion of highway development involves upgradation and expansion. Do you agree that such projects should also be eligible to use the ECB route?
Yes, and I am hopeful of the government and agencies taking a positive step towards this important aspect.

What is the current status of your SPV Rayalseema Expressway Ltd?
REL, which was set up by us, has received equity participation from SNC-Lavalin of Canada, an engineering company. The project has achieved financial closure with IDFC Ltd leading the funding, government support, and SNC pickling up 36 per cent equity for `160 crore. The project has deployed `311 crore in the form of equity and the rest is being met through debt component.

What is KMC’s manufacturing capacity for major project intermediaries like concrete or asphalt, precast and hume pipes?
We are almost self-sufficient in manufacturing major project intermediaries like concrete and asphalt for our projects. Going forward, KMC intends to increase its project capacity depending on the viability of the projects.

What is KMC’s long-term strategy vis-à-vis your growth and expansion plans?
With our focus and relentless pursuit, we hope to be one of the top five infrastructure companies operating in Indian space in next few years. We are focused on all around value-creation for investors and partners alike. Our core experience adds merit to our plans to invest in niche sectors like power, nonrenewable sources, and transportation verticals.

The order book has been encouraging for us. Going forward, we might see some challenges in sourcing skilled labour. We also foresee some concerns on availability of manpower in niche.
